How to Create the Perfect File for Print-on-Demand Books
Mastering the POD Masterpiece: How to Create the Perfect File for Print-on-Demand Books
The Print-on-Demand (POD) revolution has made it possible for any artist to become a publisher. However, there is a massive gap between a "standard" POD book and a professional-grade product that feels like it belongs in a high-end boutique.
At StationeryHQ, we don't just "print" books; we manufacture them using industrial HP Indigo presses and signature 130# house stocks. To ensure your journals, planners, or art books look as good as your digital files, you need to master the "Print Math" of book construction.
1. Single Pages vs. Spreads: The Golden Rule
When designing in InDesign or Affinity Publisher, you likely work in "Facing Pages" (spreads). While this is great for visualizing the layout, it is the #1 cause of POD file errors.
-
The Requirement: Always export your final PDF as Single Pages.
-
The Reason: Our professional imposition software needs to "shuffle" your pages onto large press sheets. If you send a PDF of spreads, the software cannot separate them, leading to your left and right pages being printed on the same side of a sheet.
2. The Binding Margin (The "Gutter")
In a book, the "Safe Zone" isn't a suggestion—it's a physical necessity. Depending on your choice of binding, a portion of your page will be "consumed" by the spine.
-
Wire-O Binding: The metal coil requires holes punched 0.25" into the paper. Keep all critical text and art at least 0.625" away from the binding edge.
-
Perfect Bound (Glue): Because the book doesn't open 180° flat, text near the center can get lost in the fold. We recommend an Inside Margin of 0.75" for a comfortable reading experience.
3. Designing the "Wrap-Around" Cover
Your cover is a separate beast from your interior. For a Perfect Bound book, you are designing one continuous piece of art that includes the Front, Spine, and Back.
-
Calculate the Spine: The width of your spine depends on your page count and paper weight. (Contact our San Jose team for a precise spine-width calculation).
-
The 130# Advantage: Most POD services use thin 80# covers. StationeryHQ uses a 130lb (350 GSM) Uncoated Matte Cover. This creates a rigid, premium feel that doesn't require a cheap-looking plastic laminate to stay flat.
4. Image Resolution: The 300 DPI Standard
POD books are held at arm's length, which means the human eye can easily spot pixelation.
-
Vector vs. Raster: Keep your typography as Vector data. If you "flatten" your book into JPEGs, your text will lose its sharp edge.
-
The 300 DPI Threshold: Every photo or scan must be 300 DPI at the actual size it appears on the page. 72 DPI "web-ready" images will look blurry and amateur on our high-definition Indigo presses.
5. Exporting for the Press (PDF/X-4)
Your final export settings determine how our press "reads" your colors and transparencies.
-
The Standard: Use the PDF/X-4:2010 preset.
-
The Bleed: Ensure you check the "Use Document Bleed Settings" box. We require a 0.125" (1/8 inch) bleed on all sides of every page to ensure no white slivers appear after trimming.
-
Color Space: Convert your document to CMYK (Gracol 2013) to ensure your vibrant digital colors translate accurately to our matte house stocks.
