Pre-Press Setup Quick Reference

Correct file setup eliminates production delays and prevents critical text from getting trimmed into the gutter or page edge. Use this technical checklist before submitting multi-page interior and cover PDFs to StationeryHQ.

1. Mandatory File Setup Parameters

  • File Format: Single-page PDF files (for interior pages) or a 1-page spread PDF (for perfect bound covers).

  • Color Space: CMYK (convert RGB and Pantone spot colors to CMYK to prevent digital shift).

  • Resolution: 300 DPI at $100\%$ scale for all embedded images and graphics.

  • Bleed Allowance: $0.125''$ ($3.175\text{ mm}$) on all outer edges.

  • Fonts: All fonts must be fully embedded or converted to vector outlines.

2. Gutter & Safe Margin Requirements

Because binding pulls the inside edge of a page into the spine Gutter, margins must be adjusted based on binding type:

Binding Type Outer Trim Safe Margin Gutter (Inside Binding Margin) Special File Considerations
Saddle Stitch $0.25''$ ($6.35\text{ mm}$) $0.25''$ ($6.35\text{ mm}$) Account for Page Creep on booklets over 32 pages
Perfect Bound $0.25''$ ($6.35\text{ mm}$) $0.50''$ ($12.7\text{ mm}$) Inside $0.375''$ is glued; keep text out of deep gutter
Wire-O / Spiral $0.25''$ ($6.35\text{ mm}$) $0.50''$ ($12.7\text{ mm}$) Hole punching penetrates $0.3125''$ ($8\text{ mm}$) into margin

3. How to Calculate Perfect Bound Spine Thickness

To calculate your cover file's total flat width, multiply the total number of interior pages by the paper thickness multiplier, then add the front and back cover widths plus bleed.

Paper Thickness Multiplier Chart (Caliper per Page)

$$\text{Spine Width (Inches)} = \left(\frac{\text{Total Interior Pages}}{2}\right) \times \text{Caliper Value}$$
Interior Paper Stock Caliper Value per Sheet (2 Pages)
70# Opaque Uncoated Text $0.0051''$
80# Smooth Uncoated Text $0.0058''$
100# Gloss Coated Book $0.0040''$
100# Matte Coated Book $0.0048''$

Example Calculation: A 100-page book on 70# Opaque Text:

$$\text{Spine Width} = 50 \text{ sheets} \times 0.0051'' = \mathbf{0.255'' \text{ Spine}}$$

4. Page Creep in Saddle Stitched Booklets

When folded sheets are nested inside one another during saddle stitching, the innermost pages extend further outward than the outer pages. This is called Creep.

                           SADDLE STITCH PAGE CREEP EFFECT
Outer Pages (Trimmed Clean) Inner Pages (Pushed Outward)
            ┌───────────────────┐ ┌───────────────────┐ ───
            │ │ │ │ ▲ Creep Distance
            │ │ │ │ ▼ (Trims off margin)
            └───────────────────┘ └───────────────────┘ ───

  • How StationeryHQ Handles Creep: Our automatic imposition software compensates for creep by shifting inner page content toward the gutter.

  • Designer Action: Keep all page numbers, footers, and border art at least $0.375''$ away from the outer trim edge to ensure no text is cut off during final face trimming.

5. Adobe InDesign PDF Export Settings

When exporting your book project from InDesign for StationeryHQ digital presses, use these exact settings:

  1. Adobe PDF Preset: Select [PDF/X-4:2010] or High Quality Print.

  2. Marks and Bleeds:

    • Check Use Document Bleed Settings (ensure Top, Bottom, Inside, and Outside are set to 0.125 in).

    • Do NOT check Crop Marks or Printer Marks unless specifically requested by pre-press.

  3. Output / Color Conversion:

    • Color Conversion: Convert to Destination (Preserve Numbers)

    • Destination Profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 or GRACoL 2006

  4. Pages: Export interior pages as Single Pages (not Spreads). Cover files should be exported as a single Spread showing Back Cover + Spine + Front Cover.
